~ a rural retreat in central Portugal -Serpins
Serpins is a small town approximately 5km from the house. It has bakeries, a small supermarket, a garage (mechanical repairs, motorbiakes,, etc) a sports centre, banks, etc. There is a river beach and a strange 'ghost' railway station. Everything you'd expect but the rails.
It's a terminus for the coach from Coimbra and you can catch a taxi from outside the train station (50m away).
Vilarinho
Vilarinho is a small town on the road from the house to Lousã. Banks and bars and the odd shop but generally sleepy.
Lousã
This is a larger town about 5km from the house. It has the camara (town hall) for the surrounding area and lots of shops. There's Lidl, Continente, agricultural supplies,bars, restaurants, etc. Lousã also has a 'ghost' train station.
Coimbra
Coimbra is a large city that used to be the capital of Portugal. There are a number of interesting tourist sites in the city including a miniature village of building from around the Portuguese empire, a botanical garden, old churches and more.
Coimbra has good connections with the rest of Portugal (especially Porto and Lisbon) and two real train staions with rails and trains. It also has a very large shopping mall, a cinema, tourist office and a number of coach connections.
Sights to see: botanical garden, University, Portugal en pequenos, Anto's tower, Santa Maria a Velha.
Gois
Is a very pretty little town about 30 minutes drive from the house. It's constructed around a river with an old stone bridge.
Arganil
A small town with various supermarkets, markets and bars and restaurants about 45 minutes from the house.
Tomar
About an hour and a half away from the house Tomar is well worth visiting. There's a large castle that acted as a staging post for the Knights templar you can spend hours walking around. There are also many shops facing on to the river and a train station that connects to Coimbra.
